A EU procedure to repeal the original safeguard measure led to a decision taken by the European Commission on Mai 7th 2008 to partially lift the safeguard measure. According to the decision, the Austrian government amended the safeguard measure in May 2008. Based on the amendment only the cultivation of GM maize MON810 is further prohibited in Austria.

Prohibition of cultivation of GM maize MON810 maize in Austria.

Austria first implemented a safeguard measure for GM maize MON810 in 1999. Due to a Decisions taken by the EC on 8th of May 2008 (2008/470/EC) Austria had to change the scope of the safeguard measure and to lift the ban with regard to the import of use for food and feed purposes. The present safeguard measure prohibits the cultivation of GM maize MON810 in Austria.
